Be the Roleplayer

What system are you playing?

Roleplaying Advice, Stories, Problems, Misc

I've been playing DnD for soooooo many years, and recently begun toying with GURPS, Amber Diceless, Unystem, d20. Then I read the Trheefold Theory, which led me over to the Forge, and G/N/S, and now I'm pretty excited about all the indie games, particularly those using Narrativism. Much better than interactive story telling, yet not the same old rules driven games.

What are you playing? And why do you like it?

It's not really a system that I play, it's a Pern Play by Email. No dice, Anne's rules, and the rest is up to the Board of Directors (that's me too).

What's this, an excuse for a plug (Midian, Midian)? Seriously though, in GNS terms, Midian allows me to slide around the full GNS graph pretty readily, without stretching the game any. That is, I can allow the players to essentially narrate their own stories without much--if any--oversight from me, go for the randomly grim & dirty details of a simulation, or simply "gets teh p0wRz-up n w1ns teh gaem!!!!!11one" This is by design, as everyone has different tastes, preferences, and experiences in gaming; and that every different gaming troupe will have its own social dynamic and favoured way of doing things. I would much rather have a game system that allows such flexibility than one that preaches "this is how you must game, or you're just not doing it right."

Currently GM'ing HARP (relatively new rpg by ICE - easier to "pick up and play" than RM)

Also bound by an NDA by ICE for some projects I can't talk about ...

Absolutely nothing! Well, at the moment anyway. Just moved (3 months ago) and had no luck in finding a new group yet. Before the move I was heavily into D&D, but in the last 3 months I've found myself reading my older games (Top Secret/S.I., WFRP v1, and LUG Star Trek) and am itching to run one of them. If I can just find a group...

GMing a playtest group for the as yet unreleased version of HARP Sci Fi, the last thing I ran previous to that was Rolemaster, both from ICE

Since becoming an official soccer mom, it seems like I haven't had the time.

Good news: not only are my kids growing up, but all our former gaming groups' kids are growing up ... so we may be able to stick them all with the non-playing spouse and pick up again soon.

My guess is will be playing D&D 3e / d20. I still have so many sourcebooks and notepads full of ideas that we haven't used yet.

No system. Used to play V:tM 2nd ed, which I liked best because the rules were so wonderfully simple and left most of it in the hands of the storyteller. Indeed I stopped using white wolf altogether largely because of the number of expansions that came out which ruined the mystery of their universe for me. Coming across players who were rules fanatics for white wolf was too much, as I felt they missed the point. Nothing worse than having your storyteller questioned and corrected by a player who knew too much about the world. Now it's freeform online writing for me. The possibility of playing with dice IRL again is there, but only with good people and not WoD o.O.
