Tricia Helfer has about two months to work on her speech, because she's the latest in the keynote lineup for NVIDIA's visual computing conference in San Jose in late August. And, being a hot former-supermodel-turned-actress and all, she had better come up with something good or I expect all the geeks fanboys industry luminaries in attendance will say, in unision, "NOT NEWS," and get up and leave or something. Happens to me all the time, and I'm stunning.

Highest honor in marketing bestowed to Leo Burnett's Nintendo Wii ads

The 40th Annual Effie Awards were presented this week in New York City. Nintendo's "Wii Would Like to Play" campaign won the highest honor. Agencies Leo Burnett, Starcom Worldwide, and Golin Harris led the marketing campaign and won the Grand Effie for the "most effective" marketing of the year.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the Nintendo exec whose obsession over his own weight led him to create Wii Fit, isn’t the only Dr. Gamer in town. Just last week, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (through its Health Games Research program at the University of California, Santa Barbara) split $2 million in grants among a dozen university programs that are studying ways to merge medicine and video game interactivity.

BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to Produce "Trek XI"

J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and possibly direct the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety and sources at Paramount Pictures. There is no title as yet for the new movie, but it will be the eleventh in the franchise. (Until a title is selected, we will usually refer to the project as simply "Star Trek XI.")
